A Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Dr Ernest M. Abraham, has advised Christians to emulate the example of Jesus Christ by aligning their character, conduct, and behaviour with the highest standards of professionalism.
‘Professionalism is not limited to the workplace; it extends to our conduct outside of it. As a church, we have the responsibility to offer high moral standards and be above reproach when it comes to professionalism,’ he stated.
Speaking on the topic, ‘Understanding Professionalism in Religious Organisations,’on Wednesday, November 11, 2024, at The Church of Pentecost Headquarters Management and Staff Retreat, he highlighted the need for competence, urging individuals to understand their strengths and weaknesses while continuously improving themselves.
He stressed that professionalism is about excelling at tasks, exceeding expectations, and committing to lifelong learning. He encouraged workers to display enthusiasm, respect, and humility in their roles, pointing out that promotions often come to those who go the extra mile and show dedication to their work.
Dr Abraham stressed the importance of moral integrity, urging Christian workers to reflect their faith through ethical behaviour.
He advised workers to avoid conflicts of interest, favouritism, and financial misconduct while adhering to organisational codes of conduct. He also encouraged maintaining professional boundaries and handling workplace responsibilities with honesty and diligence.
Touching on collaboration, he emphasised that diversity should be viewed as a strength and not a cause for division. He, therefore, called for teamwork and a commitment to shared values as members of the body of Christ.
Dr Abraham further spoke about the importance of self-control, urging workers to manage emotional challenges effectively and maintain composure, even under pressure.
Addressing professional appearance, he noted that dressing appropriately and modestly reflects commitment and professionalism. He urged workers to present themselves in ways that command respect and confidence.
He concluded his presentation by challenging religious workers to strive for excellence and maintain strong work ethics while contributing to community development.
‘Our objective as religious workers is to deliver excellent services while maintaining high standards of behaviour and attitude,” he said.
