In a significant display of unity, key political figures in Ghana gathered at the Forecourt of the State House Sunday afternoon to pledge their commitment to peace ahead of the 2024 General Elections.

This took place during the launch of a national peace campaign led by the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), in collaboration with other religious bodies.

The event, themed, ‘Seek Peace at all Times,’ saw the attendance of prominent leaders including NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, NPP vice-presidential candidate Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), APC’s Hassan Ayariga and Movement for Change’s Senior Advisor Nana Ohene Ntow.

His Excellency former President John Mahama pledged to uphold peace before, during, and after the elections. He stressed the importance of promoting peace for future generations. The NDC flagbearer proposed the expansion of the National Peace Council’s Peace Pact to include more stakeholders and make it more binding.

Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, running mate for the New Patriotic Party, on his part, reinforced his party’s commitment to peace, calling for actions over mere speeches. He referenced biblical narratives to illustrate the contrast between peace and unrest, emphasising the need for collective efforts to maintain peace.

The event also saw contributions from other notable figures, including the Chief Imam’s spokesperson, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu; Deputy Director in-charge of Operations at the Electoral Commission, Mr Samuel Tettey, and a representative of the Inspector General of Police. The police assured Ghanaians of their readiness to maintain peace during the electoral process.

President of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Apostle Eric Nyamekye called for continued commitment to peace, urging leaders and citizens to avoid turning campaigns into religious confrontations.

This gathering marked a significant step towards ensuring a peaceful and stable electoral environment in Ghana, with all parties reaffirming their commitment to national harmony.
