Veteran journalist and former Council of State member, Hon. Mrs Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie, has urged young politicians to strive to become true statesmen.
She made the call on Friday, October 10, 2024, during a presentation at the Younger Generation Politicians and Leaders Conference held at the Pentecost Convention Centre, Gomoa Fetteh.
Speaking on the theme, ‘The True Statesman: Representing God, Representing Humanity,’ Hon. Mrs Afenyi-Dadzie, emphasised the critical role of the youth in shaping Ghana’s future through leadership grounded in moral integrity.
According to her, there is a need for young leaders to embrace positions of responsibility across political, corporate, and social spheres.
Drawing on biblical principles, she emphasised the importance of integrity, citing Proverbs 22:6 (Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it).
She mentioned that true statesmanship requires qualities such as honesty, justice, and selflessness, stressing that integrity is not just about public perception but the consistency of one’s private character.
Hon. Afenyi-Dadzie also reflected on her own experiences as President of the Ghana Journalists Association, where she upheld ethical standards amidst challenges, especially during the repeal of the Criminal Libel Law. She urged young politicians to resist corruption, be the ‘conscience’ of the nation, and lead with transparency and truth, even when faced with adversity.
Addressing modern leadership challenges, she spoke about the fight against misinformation and the devastation caused by galamsey in Ghana, calling for decisive action.
She encouraged young leaders to join the ranks of what she called the ‘Nehemiah company’ and ‘Esther company,’ leading Ghana into an era of righteous governance.
The stateswoman challenged young politicians to lead with humility, integrity, and a commitment to serving both God and the nation.
