The International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), has convened in Ghana for its Annual Working Week under the theme “Your World, Our World: Resilient Environment and Sustainable Resource Management for All.” The conference aims to highlight the role of geospatial technologies and innovations in ensuring a resilient environment and sustainable management of natural resources.
The opening ceremony, held on May 19, 2024, was graced by the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, along with other diplomatic dignitaries.
The FIG global community, representing around 120 countries, saw over 90 countries register for the conference currently taking place at the La Palm Royal Hotel in Accra. The theme “Your World, Our World: Resilient Environment and Sustainable Resource Management for All” seeks to address the needs of sustainable development goals on a national scale and facilitate knowledge transfer among participants.
Addressing the gathering, President Akufo-Addo expressed appreciation for the efforts of the FIG community in selecting Ghana as the host for this year’s event. He emphasized the pivotal role surveyors play in infrastructure projects such as the Akosombo Dam,Tema and Takoradi Harbors, and the nation’s highways.
President Akufo-Addo also highlighted several challenges faced by the country, including land remuneration and spatial planning, rapid urbanization, environmental degradation, and the urgent need for sustainable resource management. He believes these challenges can be addressed through sustainable environmental practices
The President of the Licensed Surveyors Association of Ghana,Ing.Surv. Samuel Larbi Darko, who is also an elder of the Church of Pentecost, spoke to the media, stating that the FIG Working Week will enhance global networking and foster problem-solving skills towards achieving sustainable development goals.
The FIG conference in Ghana is a week-long event designed to enhance and foster global connectivity, partnerships, digital transformation, and problem-solving initiatives.
