The Deputy Executive Director for Christians Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), Dr. James Duah has expressed worry about the rapid state at which nurses and midwives are departing the country in search for a better working condition, stating that if it continues, may inadvertently complicate maternal mortality.

Addressing a gathering at the official launch of the International Day of the Midwives in Koforidua of the Eastern region, on the theme, ‘’Midwives, a Vital Climate Solution’’, Dr. Duah disclosed that last year, some two thousand, six hundred and thirty (2,630) nurses and midwives left the shores of the country.

He explained that one of the health institutions in Ghana which in two (2) years had not recorded maternal mortality case, ended up recording three (3) cases last year following the departure of its experienced midwives.

”A lot of our midwives are leaving, this may create a big skill gap in midwifery care and may inadvertently complicate maternal mortality”, he stated.

He also expressed concern about the difficulty posting midwives into the rural communities as the available ones are not many to be posted.

Touching on the welfare of health workers, Dr. James Duah admonished Ghana Registered Nursing and Midwifery Association to consider instituting a medical insurance for midwives in active service and retirees so as to cater for their medical bills even after retirement.

On her part, the National President of Ghana Registered Midwives Association Netta Forson Ackon, culminated the destructive effect of climate change on women and children.

She intimated concerns about the challenges caused by climate change, stressing on how it was affecting both humans and the environment.

She however called for a crucial public consciousness to address the menace.

The International Day of the Midwife (IDM), celebrated on May 5th worldwide, seeks to recognize the significant contributions of midwives to healthcare delivery and ensuring quality care for women and newborns throughout pregnancy and beyond.
