The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has issued an ultimatum to government, threatening a nationwide strike by the end of September 2024 if a total ban on illegal mining aka “galamsey,” is not imposed. Pay our 2022/23 BRA by October 21 or we strike – UTAG to the government

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has asked the government to pay them their 2023/23 Book and Research Allowance (BRA) by Saturday, October 21.  It said if this warning is not heeded, they will embark on an industrial action.  UTAG issued the warning in its communiqué released on Monday, October 16, signed by its National President, Professor Mamudu A. Suspension of UTAG’s Strike: Lectures Begin Today

The 15 public universities in the country are expected to resume full academic activities from today following the suspension of the industrial action by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG). This is in spite of the referenda being held across the various branches of the association to ratify or reject the decision of the National Executives Committee (NEC) of the association to suspend the strike, which began on January 10 this year. Per the constitution of UTAG, lecturers are supposed to be back in the classrooms once the strike has been suspended. This is whether or not they start the process to vote against the decision or not.
