Nearly 80,000 girls in Ghana already married or living with a man – Statistical Service
Nationally, 79,733 girls in Ghana aged 12 to 17 have been in union i.e. married or living together with a man according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC).
Out of this number, 25,999 are girls of Junior High School going age (12 to 14 years).
The regions with the highest percentage of girls ever in union are North East (13.0%), Savannah (10.9%) and Northern (10.6%) all with rates more than twice the national average (4.0%).

World Bank cuts Ghana’s growth rate to 3.5% in 2022
Growth in Ghana is expected to slow in 2022 to 3.5%, far below the country’s average pre-pandemic performance of 7%, the World Bank has pointed out in its October 2022 Africa Pulse Report.
According to the Bretton Wood institution, the Ghanaian economy has been struggling with various setbacks, including rising public debt (104.6% of Gross Domestic Product), elevated inflation (33.9% in August 2022), and a depreciating currency.
“In Ghana, the S&P Global Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) dropped from 48.8 in July to 45.9 in August 2022—the lowest reading in 28 months. The subdued level of the PMI reflects private sector weakness—with activity being held back for seven straight months.”

All unregistered SIM cards to be blocked for 2days each week till September ending
From Monday, September 5, 2022, mobile network subscribers in Ghana who have still not re-registered their SIM cards and has done only stage one re-registration will start receiving punitive actions including the blocking of all their outgoing calls and data services for 48 hours (2 days) per week.
This will be done in a sequential batch of numbers on a rotational basis weekly as a second punitive measure.
The first punitive measure includes re-routing of all outgoing calls for a message to be played before all calls go through everyday.

Online education receives boost as KNUST invests ¢17m on multimedia equipment
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has set up a $1.3 million e-learning centre with additional ¢17 million in multimedia teaching equipment.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, the move forms part of efforts to improve online teaching and learning.
“We will commission this facility to serve as the symbol of our continued commitment to digital education. I believe this infrastructure is just what we need to compete with the rest of the world in this era of digital Education.

Ghana First In Sub-Region To Commit To Nuclear Power
The Director of the Nuclear Power Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, Professor Seth Kofi Debrah says President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s approval for the inclusion of nuclear power into the country’s power generation mix indicates the country’s readiness to go nuclear.
The President, in a statement on Wednesday, approved the inclusion of nuclear technology into the country’s power generation mix.

Korean government awards scholarships to 39 public officials
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has awarded fully funded scholarships to 39 Ghanaian government officials to pursue master’s degree programmes at 18 universities in Korea.
The scholarship programme is funded by the Government of Korea, through the Capacity Improvement and Advancement for Tomorrow (CIAT) programme and seeks to contribute to the capacity development of government workers to help advance the socio-economic development of the country.

Agric contributes $476m to non-traditional exports
The agricultural sector of the economy contributed $476 million to total non-traditional export (NTE) earnings last year.
This represents 14.29 per cent of the NTE earnings in the year under review, statistics released by the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) has revealed.
The amount also represents an increase of 9.93 per cent over the $433.02 million earned in 2020.
Of the top 10 agricultural products, cashew nut was the top earner, having contributed about 60.38 per cent of the figure recorded from the sector.
This represents an increase of 14.35 per cent over what it contributed in 2020.
Flowers was the lowest earner among the top 10 earners, contributing about one per cent.

One Ghanaian delegate goes ‘missing’ after Commonwealth Games
One Ghanaian delegate is said to be among the reported missing athletes and delegates after the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
According to the UK police, the number of missing persons has risen to 17, which includes 13 athletes and four others who were with individual teams.
Out of the 17 persons to go missing, eight of them have been found with the remaining eight still unaccounted for.
The eight others who are yet to be seen include a Ghanaian, with five others from the Sri Lankan squad.
Both a competitor from Botswana and a competitor from Cameroon vanished, but both have since been located. Police and immigration officials are collaborating to assure the wellbeing and safety of everyone who has been found.

The US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has lauded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for what she said is his exemplary contribution to peace and security in West Africa, as well as Ghana’s role on the UN Security Council.
