UTAG threatens strike over illegal mining by end of September

Ghana News
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has issued an ultimatum to government, threatening a nationwide strike by the end of September 2024 if a total ban on illegal mining aka “galamsey,” is not imposed. In a strongly worded statement, UTAG criticised state-led efforts to combat illegal mining, or “galamsey,” describing them as “failed and corruption-infested militarized battles.” The Association lamented the severe damage caused by illegal mining activities, including the destruction of over 2.5 million hectares of forest cover, a 35% rise in respiratory diseases in mining areas, and a projected cost of $2.3 billion annually to the economy. “If the current trajectory continues, Ghana may be forced to import potable water within six years,” UTAG warned, underscoring t...

Africa News, Ghana News
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on the momentous occasion marking his quarter-century reign, emphatically voiced the urgent need to heal the wounds inflicted upon the environment by illicit mining activities aka ‘galamsey’. The 16th ruler to ascend the revered Golden Stool, underscored the imperative to eradicate galamsey through every conceivable strategy. The Asantehene’s discourse resonated with a profound sense of responsibility, urging the current generation to honour and preserve the environmental inheritance bestowed by their forebears. “Our top priority must be the reclamation of our environment from the ravages of galamsey. We cannot be the generation that destroys the most gracious heritage bequeathed to us by our forefathers to satisfy the greed of a few miscreants. Fo...

Ghana News, Headlines Today
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II says he is unhappy with the spate of illegal mining that has ravaged lands in the Amansie area of the Ashanti Region.  He will be visiting the area to demand answers from local chiefs who allowed the menace to destroy their lands.  He spoke at the launch of the 2023 edition of the Green Ghana Day, which is part of the government’s drive to aggressively restore degraded lands and depleted forest reserves.  “I am not happy with chiefs in the Amasie area where galamsey has taken over the lands, and I say to them that if they sit there and claim that they do not know what’s happening then you’re not fit to be a chief over there. These are matters we are going to take up them again. I don’t care whose job it is to enforce it. “ He conti...

From Eric’s Diary: The ‘Galamsey’ fight – role of the stomach

Ghana News
It is trite knowledge that there are some aspects of the functioning of the human body that we as humans have very little control over. They include nature’s call – urinate and or defecate, sleep and hunger. They come when they may. I have explained here before that like the computer experiences forced shutdown when there is a problem, sleep is a signal that the body is tired. It is for this reason that sleep can occur even when one is supposedly engaged in activities such as listening to a sermon in church, attending lectures, participating in a meeting or even while driving. Similarly, hunger occurs when the body needs food. Although it is possible for humans to go without food, that is only for a while. That is why Christians who for one reason or the other need to fast, find a...
