The Ghana AIDS Commission has raised concerns about the rising rate of new HIV infections and the demographics most affected in the country. The Commission underscored the urgent need for Ghana to implement strategies to achieve epidemic control. From 2013 to 2023, Ghana experienced a 9.0% increase in its HIV population, with projections indicating a further 6.8% increase by 2030. Despite a 14.8% reduction in new HIV infections, totaling 17,774 cases, the country also recorded 12,480 deaths due to AIDS, representing a 20.5% decrease in annual AIDS-related deaths from 2013 to 2023, with an anticipated further decline of 58.1% from 2023 to 2030. Ghana recorded 17,774 new HIV infections in 2023

Data from the 2023 national and sub-national HIV and AIDS estimates and projections showed 17, 774 people- 6,457 males and 11, 317 females- became newly infected with HIV in that year.  The number comprises 4,869 youth between 15 and 24, 1,698 children under 15, 1,520 adolescents between 10 and 19, and 16,076 adults above 15.  Dr Kyeremeh Atuahene, Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission who disclosed this in Accra on Wednesday, said that the projection showed a 14.8 per cent decrease in new infections between 2013 and 2023  “The data indicates that Ghana has not been able to achieve its annual target of a 17 per cent reduction in new HIV infections in the last ten year,” he said.  Dr Atuahene said Ghana was expected to achieve a 41 per cent increase i...

Over 70k people in Ashanti Region estimated to be living with HIV

A total of 72,429 people in the Ashanti Region are estimated to be living with HIV, according to the Ghana Aids Commission 2022 report. Out of this number, only 26,006 are currently on Anti-Retroviral (ARV) medication at health facilities, leaving a gap of 46,421 who cannot be accounted for in terms of antiretroviral uptake. These individuals are either unaware of their status or have defaulted on ARV treatment. Over 23,000 people test positive for HIV in six months

A total of 23,495 people in Ghana tested positive for HIV in the first half of this year (January to June). The figure is two percent of the 948,094 people who undertook HIV testing from January to June 2022, the Programme Manager of the National STIs and HIV/AIDS Control Programme, Dr. Stephen Ayisi Addo said in a report filed by state newspaper, graphic online. “The figure for this new infection is too high, so we need to intensify education to let people know that HIV is still real; …We have to let people know that they need to stick to the prevention strategies…,” he said.
