Pope Francis has prayed for the victims of an attack on a Nigerian church in which at least 25 worshippers were killed by gunmen.
A Vatican statement said he had learned of the deaths of dozens of people.
The assault took place in the southern town of Owo, in Ondo state.
Officials there have warned the number of casualties could rise.
They say a priest and other members of the congregation were abducted by the gunmen, whose identity is unknown.
Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, has condemned the attack calling it “heinous”.
A week ago, the head of the country’s Methodist church was kidnapped; he was released after a ransom was paid.

The National Peace Council (NPC) has initiated measures to deepen national unity by tackling the polarisation of the country in the aftermath of last year’s general election.
According to the council, political polarisation was a major issue that had the potential to bring about a crisis situation, hence the need to nip it in the bud.
The NPC said this at a dialogue for political parties and other stakeholders in Ada in the Greater Accra Region.
The dialogue, dubbed: “Countering post-2020 election violence and building consensus for greater political tolerance in Ghana”, was supported by the Commonwealth Secretariat and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The objective was to build concensus among stakeholders to strengthen mechanisms for greater national cohesion,...
One of Britain’s top universities has apologised for the “harm” caused to staff after they complained about being sent a photograph of Prince Philip who had a “history of racist and sexist comments”.
The photograph of the late Duke opening the university library was included in a recent email bulletin to staff at King’s College London.
However, a King’s College London spokesman later said that bosses at the institution remained “very proud” of its long association with Prince Philip.
Joleen Clarke, associate director at the King’s College libraries, sent the email apology to staff after some workers complained about being offended by a photograph of the Duke featuring in a staff bulletin previously sent via email.
Members of the university’s Anti-Racism Community of Practice re...
The value of mobile money transactions has more than doubled in the last twelve months, according to the Bank of Ghana.
The total value shot up by over 120 percent from February 2020 to February 2021. On a monthly basis, the value of transactions from January to February saw a minimal increase of about 1 percent.
This was contained in the Central Bank’s Summary of Macroeconomic and Financial Data report.
Apart from a few periods of reduction over the past 12 months, the value of mobile money transactions in Ghana has generally seen a consistent rise.
After dropping marginally to GHS32.8 billion in April 2020, the month after Ghana recorded its first coronavirus cases, a surge in the value of mobile money transactions was seen in May, as the figure shot up to GHS41.5 billion, re...
President Akufo-Addo says, although government is adopting strict measures to revive the Ghanaian economy, the salaries of public sector workers will not stay the same for the next four years.
His comment is in response to concerns raised by public sector workers about the delay in reviewing their salaries upward amid increased and newly introduced taxes.
Speaking at the 11th Quadrennial Delegates Congress of the Trades Union Congress in Kumasi, President Akufo-Addo assured that “salary increments for public sector works have not been frozen for the next four years”.
“The truth of the matter is that, we are not in normal times, and we are appealing to all Ghanaians including organised labour to assist the government in this endeavour to help rebuild our public finances and economy...
