President John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned the recent outbreak of violence in Bawku, describing it as unfortunate and counterproductive to peace and development in the area.
Speaking at the 63rd Graduation and Commissioning Parade of the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11, 2025, President Mahama expressed deep concern over the loss of lives, injuries, and destruction of property — including the attack on the residence of Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga.
The latest violence, which escalated on April 10, reportedly stemmed from confrontations between sections of the youth and the police over access to the local market. The clashes quickly spiralled, resulting in fatalities, injuries, and extensive property damage, including attacks on the homes of security personnel and the MP.
President Mahama stressed that no one stands to gain from such acts of violence and reiterated his administration’s commitment to working closely with security agencies to restore lasting peace in Bawku.
He commended the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies for their tireless efforts in managing the recurring tensions in the area, while calling on residents to support security operations with credible information that can aid peacekeeping efforts.
Meanwhile, the MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, in a separate statement, condemned the violence and expressed sympathy for affected families. He attributed the unrest to longstanding frustrations over unresolved chieftaincy disputes and alleged misconduct by some security personnel.
Mr. Ayariga also appealed for calm and urged all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and peaceful resolution of grievances.
