The Schools Outreach Ministry (SOM) of The Church of Pentecost has carried out a major medical screening and donation exercise in Elmina, providing free health checks for more than 1,000 students across three basic schools and donating educational and sporting items to support discipleship activities.
The outreach, organised in collaboration with the Elmina Area of the Church, was held at Essaman United M/A School, Elmina Methodist JHS, and Etsiapa Memorial Methodist Basic School. The initiative forms part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, disease prevention, moral development, and holistic well-being among schoolchildren.
During the exercise, medical professionals and volunteers conducted free health screenings and counselling sessions focused on preventive healthcare and responsible lifestyle habits. The screenings aimed to identify early signs of health conditions and help address disparities in access to quality healthcare within the school communities.
Speaking at the event, the National Coordinator of the Schools Outreach Ministry, Pastor Frank Mensah Tandoh, said the initiative was driven by the mission to equip students with essential knowledge on wellness while ensuring that any emerging health concerns are promptly addressed.
Dr Salome Mensah-Tandoh, a medical practitioner, highlighted a growing incidence of low blood levels detected among children during screening activities. She urged parents and guardians to prioritise regular medical check-ups, balanced nutrition, and consistent monitoring of their children’s health. Early detection, she emphasised, is critical to preventing complications that often go unnoticed until they become severe.
In addition to the medical interventions, the ministry donated footballs, football jerseys, devotional books, Bibles, and exercise books to the beneficiary schools. The items are expected to strengthen discipleship clubs, boost sporting activities, and enhance students’ spiritual and academic development.
Addressing the students, Apostle Lawrence Oduro-Nyarko (Elmina Area Head) and Pastor Prince Augustine Abadio underscored the importance of discipline, moral integrity, and value formation in educational settings.
The Headmaster of Elmina Methodist JHS, Mr Jacob A. Quainoo, expressed gratitude to the Church, describing the exercise as a timely and impactful support to the schools.
Several student beneficiaries also conveyed appreciation, noting that the outreach not only improved their access to healthcare but also contributed to their extracurricular and spiritual growth.
