Laid-off Twitter Africa team ‘ghosted’ without severance pay or benefits, former employees say

International, Science & Technology
Former employees of Twitter Africa who were laid off as part of a global cost-cutting measure after Elon Musk’s acquisition have not received any severance pay more than seven months since leaving the company, several sources told CNN. In late May, the former employees, who were based in the Ghanaian capital Accra, accepted Twitter’s (TWTR) offer to pay them three months worth of severance, the cost of repatriating foreign staff and legal expenses incurred during negotiations with the company. But they have not received the money or any further communication, the sources said. “They literally ghosted us,” one former Twitter Africa employee told CNN. “Although Twitter has eventually settled former staff in other locations, Africa staff have still been left in the lurc...

Instagram owner Meta to launch Twitter rival on Thursday

International, Science & Technology
Facebook owner Meta is launching its new app to rival Twitter and says it will go live on Thursday. The app, which is called Threads and is available for pre-order on the Apple App Store, will be linked to Instagram. Screengrabs show a dashboard that looks similar to Twitter. Meta describes Threads as a “text based conversation app”. The move is the latest in a rivalry between Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter owner Elon Musk. Last month, the pair agreed to a physical fight, though it is unclear how serious the two men were about actually holding a bout. “Thank goodness they’re so sanely run”, Mr Musk responded to a tweet about Threads, in an apparent fresh swipe at Mr Zuckerberg. Meanwhile, Twitter has said that the popular user dashboard, TweetDeck will go beh...

Furthermore, Twitter accounts that already have the verification, will have to comply with this new mechanism and pay up for the blue tick. The report suggests that verified users will have a total 90 days to move to Twitter Blue or they will end up l...

Twitter sees first win in case against Elon Musk

International, Science & Technology
A Delaware judge agreed to fast-track the case with an October trial date instead of February that Musk wanted. Twitter Inc. scored an early win against Elon Musk in its fight to make him complete his $44 billion buyout, as a Delaware judge agreed to fast-track the case with an October trial date. Chancery Court Chief Judge Kathaleen St. J. McCormick on Tuesday scheduled the trial for five days in the fall, instead of two weeks in February as the billionaire requested. Twitter argued it was suffering under the Tesla Inc. founder’s withdrawal from the deal and disparagement of the social media company. The ruling marks the first victory for Twitter in a case in which many legal experts say Musk will be the underdog. In a hearing in Wilmington, the judge made clear she saw littl...

Twitter rolls out testing of long-form ‘Notes’ feature with Ghanaian writers

Science & Technology, World News
In a recent announcement, Twitter revealed that a small group of writers from Ghana are joining others from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom to test the latest feature from the social media platform, “Notes”. Notes is a new way to write and publish long-form content on the social media platform, and will give your favourite writers on Twitter the chance to go beyond 280 characters for the first time, using a rich-text editor to capture articles, thought pieces, and other kinds of content. The selected writers now have access to Notes as part of this initial testing phase, using a new “Write” tab, where they can write and access all of their Notes. Their followers and people on Twitter will be able to access their long-form content by clicking on the new “Notes” t...
