Meta OKs deleting Threads without losing Instagram

Lifestyle & Social, Science & Technology
Changes are being rolled out to the Threads app that will enable users to delete their account while keeping the linked Instagram account. An Instagram account is required to sign up to the Twitter-like app, but users were frustrated that it was impossible to delete Threads alone. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri revealed the change in a post on Threads. Initially hailed as a "Twitter-killer", Threads struggled to sustain early record-breaking growth.ADVERTISEMENT In October Mark Zuckerberg, the head of parent-company Meta, revealed that three months on from its July launch the app was attracting around 100 million monthly users - down by more than a half. When Threads was first revealed it was seen as a direct challenge to the Elon Musk-owned X, formerly known as Twitter. ...
Don’t let social media ruin your relationship

Don’t let social media ruin your relationship

Lifestyle & Social
Every time I scroll through my timeline, someone’s in a new relationship, pregnant, engaged, or the recipient of a significant other’s beautiful, grand gesture. It’s so incredible to see all of these people in such happy relationships, but at the same time, some people feel green with envy. After seeing some of the things that boyfriends do for their girlfriends, many of us start to compare our own relationships to the ones we see on social media. We tell ourselves, “I wish my boyfriend would propose already,” “I wish my boyfriend would do something creative for me,” and “My boyfriend doesn’t do this. He must not love me.” While it’s never bad to have high expectations for your relationships and to know that you deserve all of the finer things in life, it’s just as im...

YouTube has said it has "suspended monetisation" on Russell Brand's channel for "violating" its "creator responsibility policy". The online platform said it was taking action "to protect" its users. The Metropolitan Police has received a report of an alleged sexual assault in 2003 in the wake of allegations in the media about the star. Over the weekend the comedian and actor was accused of rape and sexual assaults between 2006 and 2013, which he denies. Elon Musk: Social media platform X could go behind paywall

International, Science & Technology
Elon Musk has suggested that all users of X, formerly called Twitter, may have to pay for access to the platform. In a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the billionaire said a payment system was the only way to counter bots. "We're moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the system," the Tesla and SpaceX boss said. The BBC approached X for further details but has not yet received a statement from the company. It is unclear whether this was just an off-the-cuff comment, or a signal of firmer plans that have yet to be announced. Mr Musk has long said that his solution for getting rid of bots and fake accounts on the social media platform is charging for verification. Since taking over Twitter last year he has looked to incentivise use...

TikTok fined €345m over children’s data privacy.

International, Science & Technology
Irish regulators have fined TikTok €345m (£296m) for violating children's privacy. The complaint concerned how the social media app handled children's data in 2020 - particularly around age verification and privacy settings. It is the biggest fine to date TikTok has received from regulators. A spokesperson for the social media firm said it "respectfully disagree[s] with the decision, particularly the level of the fine imposed". "The criticisms are focused on features and settings that were in place three years ago, and that we made changes to well before the investigation even began, such as setting all under 16 accounts to private by default," they said. The fine was issued by Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDP...

Ghana school students talk about their social media addiction, and how it affects their use of English

Ghana News, Lifestyle & Social, Science & Technology
Social media networks such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube and Instagram have been shown to have significantly transformed student behaviour. But the focus has been on students’ social behaviour. And on how the English language is being spoken because of social media use. The relationship between social media and students’ English language writing has been largely ignored. Our team of four researchers who specialize in language studies set out to study the relationship between social media use and English language performance. We studied one English as a Second Language class at Fiaseman Senior High School in Tarkwa, western Ghana. English is Ghana’s official language and is the medium of instruction for all levels of education. We learnt from the students t...

Twitter sues Elon Musk over $44bn takeover deal

Science & Technology
Twitter is suing billionaire Elon Musk to try to force him to buy the social media firm, setting up a legal battle with the world's richest man. It comes after Mr Musk announced he was walking away from his proposed $44bn (£37bn) takeover of Twitter on Friday. He claimed Twitter had not given information about the number of fake and spam accounts on the platform. Now Twitter has asked a Delaware court to order Mr Musk to complete the merger at the agreed $54.20 per Twitter share.
