Runway lighting stolen from Nigerian airport

Africa News
Thieves have stolen the lighting system for one of the runways at Nigeria’s busiest airport just months after it was installed, an airport authority spokesman has confirmed to the BBC. An investigation has now been launched to “arrest the criminals [and] recover what’s missing”, Yakubu Funtua added. It is not clear when the system was taken from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. But local media reported that airport workers were involved in the theft. The ground lights were installed in November, ending years of after-dusk restrictions on landing on that wing of the airport. Domestic carriers were forced to divert to the international section and taxi about 4km (2.5 miles) back to the right terminal, which caused flight disruptions. Mr Funtua told the BBC t...

Two state governments in Nigeria have reduced the working week to three days for state employees. The move is to help them cope with increased petrol costs, following the federal government announcement to scrap fuel subsidies. Nigeria is currently struggling to control the rising cost of transportation, which is affecting many citizens. The Edo and Kwara states governments’ announcement will fuel debate in the public and private sectors about measures to help workers cope with the rising costs. Public service staff across Nigeria work five days a week, but there’s still a lot of confusion about the fate of employees in the private sector where some are required to work for six days a week. There are also indications that other states may adopt the new model. Nigeria’s fe...

More than 500 dead in Nigeria floods – Authorities

Africa News
The authorities in Nigeria say the number of people killed by floods ravaging the country in recent weeks has risen to more than 500. More than 1,500 others have been wounded while 1.4 million are displaced. Since the end of July, the West African country has been grappling with a wave of flooding affecting 31 of its 36 states including the capital Abuja. The floods are caused by heavy rains and release of excess waters from dams within Nigeria and a major dam in neighbouring Cameroon by the authorities. Experts also partly blame the flooding on the impact of climate change. The country is hit by floods every year. But this year’s disaster is the worst in more than a decade. Giving an update on the situation at a press conference on Tuesday, the permanent secretary of the...

EU seeks to replace Russia gas with Nigeria gas

International, World News
The European Union is seeking additional gas supplies from Nigeria as the bloc prepares for potential Russian supply cuts, Matthew Baldwin, deputy director general of the European Commission’s energy department, said on Saturday. Baldwin was speaking in Nigeria where he held meetings with officials from Africa’s largest oil producer this week. He was told that Nigeria was improving security in the Niger Delta and planned to re-open the Trans Niger pipeline after August, which would yield more gas exports to Europe. The EU imports 14% of its total LNG supplies from Nigeria and there is potential to more than double this, Baldwin told Reuters by phone. Oil and gas output in Nigeria is being throttled by theft and vandalism of pipelines, leaving gas producer Nigeria LNG Ltd’s term...
