President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to enhance the capacity of Ghana’s National Defense University as part of efforts to advance security education and strategic military training within the Ghana Armed Forces.

Speaking at the 63rd Graduation and Commissioning Parade of the Ghana Military Academy earlier today, President Mahama, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, disclosed that the transformation of the Military Academy into a fully-fledged university will soon be formalized through a Presidential Charter.

According to the President, this transformation is intended to equip the Ghana Armed Forces with advanced skills and knowledge to confront emerging security threats such as global terrorism while contributing to peace and stability in Ghana and across the West African sub-region.

He further revealed that the new National Defense University will offer specialised strategic academic programmes designed not only for military personnel but also for qualified Ghanaian civilians seeking higher education in security-related fields.

Additionally, President Mahama indicated that the commissioning course for newly graduated military officers will be upgraded to a Post-Graduate Diploma status — a move aimed at enhancing their academic and professional competencies.

President Mahama reiterated his government’s unwavering commitment to equipping the Ghana Armed Forces with the requisite resources, training, and institutional support necessary for the effective discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
